From Kansas Historical Quarterly, Vol.II #3 Aug. 1933 - CHURCH BOOK OR BOOK OF RECORDS FOR THE BAPTIST CHURCH CONSTITUTED AT THE DELAWARE BAPTIST MISSION, 5 April 1841. John Newcom, Mary Hendricks, Mary Charles, Betsy Zigler, Charles Journeycake, Betsy Hill and others formed their own church. J.M. Newcom - Church Clerk 27 June 1841 - Jane Journeycake brought letter from Methodist and asked to Join. Also John Connor and wife came for Baptism. November 1841 - Solomon Journeycake asked for baptism. Sept. 1842 - John Journeycake was baptized. April 1843 - George Washington was baptized. On 6 December 1839 the STOCKBRIDGE Indians from Winnibago Lake Wisconson Territory arrived to make their home with the Delawares. Eight or ten of this number including the Principal Chief are expected to join the Church. Joseph Henry Killbuck & wife Eli Hendricks & wife Widow Lydia Konkaput Abigail H. Killbuck all joined. Freemont outfitted his group in 1842 at the town of Secondine (now Muncie) on the Kansas River, Wyondotte Co. Kansas. His first exploring trip to the west/ The e was a trading post run by Choteau at that time. Moses Grinter arrived at Secondine in Jan 1831 and started Grinter Ferry. He married Ann Marshall, a Delaware girl and raised 10 children. He died in 1878 Pg 266 - The Delaware troops for the Mexican War crossed over Taleys Ferry in 1846. Pg.272 - Perl W. Morgan, "History of Wyandotte Co. Kan."pg 320 - "Henry Tiblow a club-footed Indian operated a Ferry at Tiblow now called Bonnor Springs, for many years before 1866. Pg. 276 - Pascal Fish had a Ferry beyond DeSoto on Kansas Reservation. He was operating befor the Mexican War in 1846. "A portion of Donephans expedition to Mexico crossed on this Ferry in 1846. (Fish was a cousin to Tecumseh and the Propnet.) Pg 283 - John C. Freemont passed through Lawrence in early 1840's. FROM KANSAS HISTORICAL QUARTERLY Vol. V #4 - Nov. 1936 JOURNAL OF ISAAC McCOY FOR THE EXPLORING EXPITITION OF 1830 by Lela Barnes Pg.340 - McCoy a native of Michigan and a Baptist Missionary came in 1829 to Missouri and made a short tour of the country beyond the Missouri River. Then was selected by the Government to survey the lands which had been assigned to the Delaware tribe. At that time Major John Campbee was the agent for the Shawnee and the Delawares. Pg.343 - Shawnee Tenskwatawa (the Prophet) and a brother of Tecumpseh voted in favor of a Mission among the Indians. Fish, cousin of Tecumpseh and his party is mentioned. Johnny Quick (old man - 2nd Chief of Delawares) accompanied McCoy on first part of the survey, according to the treaty. J. Connor the Delaware interpeter also accompanied the party. Major Dougherty of Cantonment Levensworth accompanied McCoy (Sept 1839) Pg 356 - Jackson shot a fine Buck deer. Chief (Capt Johny Quick) satisfyed with the land chosen left for Levenworth on Sept. 20. By Sept.28, the Survey Party had reached Levenworth and the first part of their job was done. Chief Quick signed that the land was satisfactory and it was witnessed by Connor and Shane the ½ breed Shawnee. Pg 376 - On Nov.21 they passed the new settlement formed by the Delawares on their land. Spent a few minutes with their aged PRINCIPAL CHIEF ANDERSON. Pg. 377 - Fish, Chief of the Shawnees agrees to a school for them from the Baptist Mission |
